LLM Echo Chamber
Echo chamber: a place where you hear what you want to hear, your thoughts get echoed back in different forms, and that reinforces your beliefs.
I’ve been using ChatGPT and Gemini Pro to brainstorm personal decisions in life. My goal is to get a different and deeper understanding of things whether it’s about my diet, communication skills, personal behavior traits, or even traveling.
ChatGPT writes back like a concerned older brother who actually cares, while Gemini writes more like a robot without the human verbiage but gives a wider breadth of ideas. That’s why I like to have both and I use that alternatively.
What I’ve noticed with both these LLMs is that they dive deep into the question and end up strengthening my existing thoughts. If I compare this to talking to a friend, they’d challenge any idea I have or give examples from their own life that shift my perspective and show me a different angle.
Now I’ve started talking to my friends to gather different viewpoints and then use LLMs to go deeper into each idea or belief. This whole process is long, but once I form a new idea or belief, it feels set in stone with proper understanding and background not just feelings.
Edit:
Something one of my friends pointed out was — we rely on LLMs to think now a days whenever we feel down or uncomfortable. As a species, we are outsourcing how to feel on token predictor and a long reliance on which will slowly devoid us from looking inside and stop us from truly expressing ourselves.
As we develop LLMs further, it needs to listen to us more and have a feedback loop which understands that humans function better when we are understood(where we are coming from), our biases are slowly questioned and reasoned with.
